We are going to another lockdown and the financial crisis isn’t so great either! Top it up with the fear of hunger and war. Some of us are surviving by getting our meals day by day. Soon, it will be very hard to get access to supermarkets. So we prepared for you a list of Lebanese necessities to have around your house as part of your survival kit, at all times and as soon as possible to sustain yourself during a lockdown or any other emergency. Make sure to pay close attention to the “Survival Kit”
Your Shopping List (Lebanese Necessities)
We prepared a list of the cheapest items to get that will help you cook delicious meals and get you through the lockdown and quite possibly hardship.
Lebanese Necessities #1: Survival Kit
It’s time to think about long durable and filling food items. You should get as many as possible from the following list. However, make sure to leave some for others as well! We’re all in the same boat!
- Pasta
- Noodles
- Bread
- Potatoes (and lots of it!)
- Rice
- Flour
- Lentil
- Soup
- Water
- Canned meat and/or turkey
- Tea
- Powder Milk
- Sugar
- Canned Tuna
- Canned Beans & Hummus
- Butter
- Vegetable Oil
- Processed Cheese
Lebanese Necessities #2: Lebanese Specials
In addition to the survival kit, you should get some lebanese specials. Be cautious as some of these items will only last you up to 1 week while others can last up to 3 months!
- Labneh
- Kaak (and lots of it!), Biscuits, Nuts & Crackers
- Bread Crumbs (or you can just make it out of kaak if needed)
- Zaatar
- Your favorite spices
Lebanese Necessities #3: More Vegetables & Fruits
Now that you got the bare minimum, you need to think about some veggies. It’s true that vegetable lifespan is not so great! However, they’re the cheapest thing you can find out there! They provide you with the needed vitamins and nutrition your body needs. You can increase their duration time up to 1 week if placed in the fridge. That is enough to get you through for a little while. Another option, if feasible, is to get canned veggies. These usually have a long shelf lifespan but are a bit more expensive. So what are the best vegetables to get?
- Apples
- Lemon
- Tomatoes
- Cucumbers
- Lettuce
- Lime
- Onion
- Carrot
- Zucchinis
Lebanese Necessities #4: More Proteins
Those extras are also important but a bit more expensive and with a slightly shorter life span than the survival kit especially if we get another surprise power outage. So make sure to prioritize the survival kit over these.
- Eggs
- Chicken Breast
- Minced Meat
Chicken can be any kind such as escalope, tawouk, etc. but speaking of experience, we highly advise you to just get chicken breasts. You can season them and transform them yourself at home. You will be happy with the amount of savings you will make. The same story goes for meat.
Lebanese Necessities #5: We Got the Food, Now What?
Now that you have enough food to help you through lockdown for a while (or any other bad event that is), you need to think of the following items.
- Tissues
- Shampoo
- Hand & Dish Soap
- Washing Machine’s Detergents
- A HUGE bottle of Alcohol for disinfection
- Extra Gas (for cooking / getting warm)
- Health Pads
- Your Medicines (one box of each to get you by)
Final Note
Now that you are ready for lockdown (or anything else for the matter), make sure to follow those guidelines.
- Consume the food with a lower life span first.
- Balance the amount of ingredients (especially proteins) you use in a dish. For example, don’t use all the minced meat you bought in one dish.
- Balance your meals and don’t be tempted too much by snacks.
